Mexican Slang Meaning

Spanish: Al Nopal Sólo Lo Van A Ver Cuando Hay Tunas.

Type: Proverb

Literal Meaning: People only go to see the nopal cactus when it has fruit.

Meaning: Prosperity makes friends, adversity tries them.

En el primer siglo A.C., Publilius Syrus escribió un proverbio (en latín) que es lo mismo que “Al nopal sólo lo van a ver cuando hay tunas”. Es decir, cuando tienes qué ofrecer, se te acercan muchas personas pero cuando no tienes nada ves quienes son tus verdaderos amigos. (In the first century B.C., Publilius Syrus wrote a proverb in Latin that translates as “Prosperity makes friends, adversity tries them.” In other words, when you have a lot to offer, you are surrounded by people but when you have nothing, you see who your real friends are.)
