Uruapan, avocado capital of Mexico, is the commercial center for regional agriculture. Although the town has a haphazard appearance, it has some nice hotels and restaurants. Parque Nacional Barranca de Cupatitzio, formerly known as Parque Nacional Eduardo Ruiz, is a lovely urban park well worth a visit. Uruapan is also a good base for exploring the region’s attractive country churches as well as the defunct church at San Juan Parangaricutiro, almost completely engulfed in lava from a 20th-century eruption.
