Long a budget travelers' dream, Tulum today is growing fast. The only major Maya city overlooking the sea inhabited at the time of the Spanish conquest, the Tulum ruins are often visited by travelers to Cancun, 130 km (81 miles) to the north, at the other end of the Riviera Maya. Today hotels and restaurants are springing up to serve travelers, but to the south, the Boca Paila peninsula and the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve offer up less-visited beaches and opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts and anglers.
