At 2,670 meters (8,760 feet) above sea level, Toluca is industrial and not terribly appealing to tourists. As Mexico’s highest state capital, it sometimes sees snow, at other times baking sun. Still, a short jaunt (traffic notwithstanding) from Mexico City, Toluca, an ancient pre-Hispanic city, does offer a well-known indoor-outdoor market (market day is Friday, but it bustles every day, actually) as well as a botanical garden and several museums.
