Capital of the eponymous state, San Luis Potosi is off most foreign tourists’ radar. But this city in north-central Mexico has a European feel in its historic downtown, with many beautiful secular buildings and churches, as well as good museums. The new cultural center, built at the former penitentiary, is a beautiful example of restoration of public buildings and a great place to see music or dance recitals. With inexpensive restaurants and hotels, SLP is a great base for exploring the state’s distinctive ecosystems.
