No visit to this town is complete without sampling one (or more!) of the delicious, flaky turnovers that are the legacy of British miners. The most popular spot in town is Pastes El Portal ($, Portal del Comercio #2), so you can bet the sweet or savory pies are fresh from the oven.

Restaurante Real del Monte ($$$, Ave. Hidalgo #55, tel. 771/797-0996, www.restauranterealdelmonte.com) serves typical regional dishes and is open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

How to Get There & Away

Real del Monte is just 20 km (12 miles) northeast of Pachuca. Don’t forget the town is called Mineral del Monte on most maps. Take Highway 105 and turn on a signed road on the right. It is also just 16 km (10 miles) from Huasca, another Magic Town with plenty of outdoor activities nearby. Real del Monte is 125 kilometers (78 miles) from Mexico City following first Hwy 85D and then Blvd. Luis Donaldo Colosio to signs for the “Corredor de la Montaña” (Mountain Route).

From Puebla:
Approximate distance: 160 Km.
Take the new Arco Norte Highway and exit towards Pachuca; then follow Blvd. Luis Donaldo Colosio to signs for the “Corredor de la Montaña” (Mountain Route).

From Querétaro (and the west)
Approximate distance: 260 Km.
Take Highway 57D toward Huichapán, Ixmiquilpan, Actopan, and Pachuca. Follow Blvd. Luis Donaldo Colosio to signs for the “Corredor de la Montaña” (Mountain Route). A faster (but not free) route is to take Highway 75 to Highway Arco Norte toward Tula de Allende, and then taking the México--Pachuca Highway (Mex 85) to Pachuca. From there, follow the above directions.

By Bus

The main bus station in Pachuca is el Terminal Terrestre (Blvd. Rojo Gomez; tels. 771/713-3449, 771/719-1131, or 771/719-1132); however the most frequent buses to Real del Monte are vans that leave from downtown Pachuca on Calle Venustiano Carranza in front of the Iglesia de la Asunción (Temple of the Virgin of the Assumption).
