Tacos Kaluga
This taco shop’s odd name refers to the nickname of the owner’s daughter. It’s found on a short street (Calle 5 de Febrero) that stretches a few blocks between Avs. Revolución and Aldama, just below Av. Gómez Pérez. I’m sure there are other just as worthy cenadurías (casual spots for din-din) in Pachuca, but we were recommended this one, we liked it, and we’re sticking to it.
Sit at one of the orange-clothed tables topped in plastic and mark on your little paper menu the number of tacos, gringas, tostadas, sopes, quesadillas, and other antojitos you want. Portions are generous, so start small and then ask for more items as you go along.
There are also frijoles charros (cowboy-style beans) and a carne asada plate, the latter served with beans and grilled onions and plenty of hot tortillas. The spicy salsa verde is excellent. Tacos Kaluga owner Don Antonio is an Elvis fan, so you’ll most likely be serenaded by The King as you chow down. To drink, order a fresh fruit water (agua de sabor), Nescafe, tea, soda, or bottled water. No smoking allowed.
