Misol-Há
Visitors to Palenque frequently pay a visit to Misol-Há, where a 40-meter (130-foot) waterfall plunges into a pool surrounded by pines. The 20-hectare site belongs to the San Miguel Ejido, with about 2,500 inhabitants. In their language, Chol Maya, Misol-Há means "the water that sweeps."
The site is just about 22 km (14 miles) from Palenque and often visited on a half day trip out of that town along with a jaunt to more extensive waterworks at Agua Azul. The falls are most impressive during the rainy season---summer and fall---also a good time for a dip in the pool that forms at its base. You can walk behind the spray to a cave and a subterranean pool; be careful not to slip on the rocks.
Misol-Ha is south of Palenque on Highway 199, a three-kilometer walk in from the road. Entrance to the site costs 15 pesos per person. Although most people make only a pit-stop here to admire the falls, the site has overnight accommodations should you wish to spend the night. There are basic camping facilities as well as simple but comfortable cabins with private bathroom and screened windows. Those with tiny porch and a double bed go for just under 300 pesos per night, while two-bedroom units with kitchen cost about 520 pesos. The on-site restaurant sells regional and Mexican dishes.
