Mexican Auto Insurance 101

Before taking any trip, it is helpful to create a checklist of all the items you’ll need to bring with you. Before driving across the border into Mexico, the first item on your checklist should be purchasing quality Mexican auto insurance.

There are two reasons to do so. First, authorities in Mexico do not recognize an insurance policy as valid unless it is underwritten by a Mexican insurance company. Therefore, your insurance policy from the United States, Canada, or elsewhere has no merit, and offers no liability protection, in Mexico. A U.S. or Canadian policy may offer some level of theft and physical damage coverage, but this is usually limited to the border zone only; check with your insurance provider for specific details on your coverage.

Second, the legal system in Mexico allows for strict adherence to traffic laws and substantial penalties for any violation including jail time, heavy fines, and confiscation of your vehicle. The liability coverage in your Mexican insurance policy provides proof that you can respond to any damages or injuries caused to others that you may be responsible for in case of an accident. Legal assistance is also included to help take care of any legal requirements in the event of an accident or theft of your vehicle.

There are various components to a Mexican insurance policy that can be changed or added to make your coverage more comprehensive. Liability limits can be increased as can medical payments for passengers inside the insured vehicle. Fixed deductibles and vandalism coverage can also be selected. Be sure to discuss with the insurance salesperson all of the options available, and to read over carefully the policy that you purchase.
