Taxco: Although the word is overused, Taxco is simply charming. Narrow streets lead up and down the hilly city. Its Santa Prisca church is a marvel of pink quarry stone and inside, more than 20 tons of gold leaf form a dizzying tableau. The town’s claim to fame, however, is its silver shops: Taxco has hundreds of silver-smithing workshops, which produce much of the country’s silver jewelry and ornamental objects. Travelers can purchase them at the local silver market or the innumerable shops lining downtown streets.
