Water World

LA Bay’s chief attraction is the water. The Sea of Cortez (AKA Gulf of California) is one of the richest aquatic environments on earth. The narrow sea separating mainland Mexico from the Baja peninsula is home to an amazing variety of creatures. Kayakers hugging the coastline or visiting the islands off the shore of the C-shaped bay see friendly-looking brown pelicans, blue-footed boobies, and leaping white-sided dolphins.

LA Bay is a perfect place for birders. Here you’ll find a wonderful variety of shore and open water birds. There are pelicans of course, all kinds of egrets, blue- and brown-footed boobies, frigates, skimmers, oyster catchers, osprey, and peregrine falcons, as well as vermillion fly catchers and myriad other terrestrial species.

Divers mingle with wide-winged mantas, sea lions, and in the fall, enormous and non-threatening whale sharks. Snorkeling off one of many small offshore islands brings you close to glaring moray eels, stellar starfish, reclusive octopus, and an amazing variety of fish. You need not be Jacques Cousteau, Jr. to experience the beauty of this sea.
