El Fuerte
Founded by young explorer Francisco de Ibarra in the mid-16th century, El Fuerte served as a trading post for hundreds of years and is now dedicated mainly to agriculture and tourism. Although most people spend a night at most, the charmingly provincial town is a good base for fishing and birding. Some of the grandest homes in town have been turned into hotels.
Story continues after photos...

About an hour and a half east of Los Mochis and around 182 meters (600 feet) above sea level, El Fuerte is small, quaint and historic. It’s pleasant to visit the colonial town and spend the night in one of its snug hotels before boarding the Chihuahua al Pacifico train at 7:40 the next morning.
Places to see and outdoor recreation:
- Hot springs around Choix, some 30 miles northeast of El Fuerte
- Traditional dances by Mayo Indians from Tehueco
- Guided and unguided bike tours of the city
- Floating in inflatable raft (or kayaking) on the Rio Fuerte to see native and migratory birds
- Fishing for black bass on El Fuerte Lake
