El Fuerte

Founded by young explorer Francisco de Ibarra in the mid-16th century, El Fuerte served as a trading post for hundreds of years and is now dedicated mainly to agriculture and tourism. About an hour and a half east of Los Mochis and around 182 meters (600 feet) above sea level, El Fuerte is small, quaint and historic. It’s pleasant to visit the colonial town and spend the night in one of its snug hotels before boarding the Chihuahua al Pacifico train at 7:40 the next morning.
