Cascada Basaseachi National Park and Candameña Canyon
One of the least explored canyons of the Sierra Tarahumara and the last discovered by outsiders, Candameña Canyon is more than 1,737 meters (5,700 feet) deep. Part of the Mayo basin, it was formed by the Candameña River and is accessible from Creel or Chihuahua. Basaseachi Falls National Park (121 km,75 mi from Creel) has outstanding vistas and paths through pine and oak forests. Travelers with time and a sense of adventure can explore numerous lateral canyons, swim in clear pools and running streams, and soak in thermal springs throughout the canyon.
Places to visit and outdoor activities:
- Magnificent Basaseachi Falls, with a sheer drop of 246 meters. Hike down to, and swim in, the pool at its base.
- Peña el Gigante, a monolithic stone with sheer vertical drop of 885 meters, one of the tallest vertical rock faces in the country.
- The mining town of Uruachi and environs
- Cascada Piedra Volada, 11th longest waterfall in the world
- Rock paintings and archaeological ruins in Otachique Valley, sacred to the Tarahumara
- Walks from San Isidro Huajumar to lookout points of Cerro de la Corona and Cerro de la Yegua
- Hiking and rock climbing near the picturesque old mining town of Maguarichi (with thermal springs) and throughout the area
